About our Church
Wangaratta Wesleyan Methodist Church is a Christian Church who meet in a building located at the corner of Parfitt Road and the Great Alpine Road.
We believe in being welcoming, creating a family-friendly atmosphere and placing value and emphasis on ministering to our young people. We strive to provide a range of opportunities to grow your faith, as well as to serve and use your gifts.
Founded in 1978, services commenced at “The Centre” in Chisholm Street. In 2002, a block of land was purchased on the Great Alpine Road, at the edge of town. On the 31st July, 2005, the new premises was dedicated “To the glory of God and the service of our community.”
FOLLOWING JESUS
We desire our people to become fully committed followers of Jesus who love God and one another. We encourage this through biblical teaching and discipleship
GROWING GOD’S PEOPLE
We love and strengthen our community of believers through worship, prayer, teaching, caring, fellowship and hospitality. We look for opportunities to encourage and serve alongside the wider body of Christ.
REACHING OUR WORLD
We reach our world, with the gospel of God’s grace showing love, mercy and justice by our words and actions with the empowering of the Holy Spirit. We equip and support our people for mission and evangelism both locally and globally
Steve Van Der Poel
Steve and his wife, Amanda, moved with their three kids from Brisbane in January 2021 to take on the role of Senior Pastor here at Wangaratta. Steve spent almost 15 years in the Queensland Police Service and has a passion for people in the church to embrace their faith and live it out in the real world. Steve loves the opportunity to share a good coffee with people, regardless of their background or beliefs, and chat about the successes and challenges of life and he also serves as a local police chaplain.
Steve and Amanda want the church to be a place where people of all ages are embraced and valued, and more importantly, where they can find out about the life-altering difference that Jesus can make in their lives.
In his spare time, Steve loves camping, the outdoors, stand up paddleboarding and cheering his beloved Western Bulldogs. Amanda loves Worship, Women’s ministry and reading a book with a good cup of tea.
