Proverbs for Wednesday: Wisdom at the beginning and the end

With just over three weeks to Christmas, this is naturally a time when we reflect on the Incarnation of Christ. He who was with the Father at creation (Col. 1:15 -17), through whom all things were made (Col 1:16), and the He was the Word of God who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).

There’s an amazing revelation of ‘Wisdom’ in Proverbs that parallels the role of Christ in creation. In Proverbs chapter 8, wisdom is personified, and speaks about itself as if it was a person!

The Lord brought me forth as the first of His works,I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning before the world began. – Proverbs 8:22,23

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding He set the heavens in place. By his knowledge the deeps were divided. – Proverbs 3:19,20

I was there when He set the Heavens in place,……..and when He marked out the foundations of the earth… I was the craftsman at His side. – Proverbs 8:27-30

Just pause for a moment and re-read those statements, and what they are saying. They are rather tantalising. Compared with the above statements about Christ, they are almost saying wisdom is prophetic about Christ ! However, it is, it’s clear that wisdom was the operating principle by which God the Father and Son created. And, wisdom was the operating principle by which God sent His Son into the world when the time had fully come. Wisdom has always been in God’s arsenal to achieve and get things done.

Now, Christ is the ultimate personification of God’s wisdom. He is wisdom incarnate.Christ Jesus who has become for us wisdom from God. (1 Corinthians 1:30). If the Spirit of Christ is living and operating in us, we will have all the wisdom we will ever need!

PRAYER: Lord, again we thank you for the provision of all we need, including the gifts of wisdom. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this season, we praise you that He came to be our wisdom. We praise you that at times when we don’t know what to do or say, we can express the wisdom of Christ as you operate in our minds and guide us. In Jesus Name, Amen
