For the past 37 Wednesdays, we have been looking at the book of Proverbs and it’s practical applications of wisdom. I’m just taking two more weeks in this series before taking a Christmas break finishing the series by looking at wisdom itself, and what it is.
We’ve all been caught out at times saying and doing things that are not wise. Our advantage, however, is that in Proverbs we are given the wisdom to correct our mistakes and thoughts and to guide our actions. The underlying rationale of all the Proverbs is that they express God’s wisdom. His way for us to look at life and how we operate.
Wisdom starts with knowing and reverencing God.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. – Proverbs 1:5.
The more we know God and His revealed thoughts, the more we will know wisdom and how to express it. The practical outcomes of applied wisdom are many. We have seen many of them over the past 37 Wednesdays. Here’s a few more from Proverbs for today.
If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you. – Proverbs 9:12.
Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men. – Proverbs 2:12
Do not forsake wisdom and she will protect you. Love her and she will watch over you. – Proverbs 4:6
Esteem her and she will exalt you. Embrace her and she will honour you. – Proverbs 4:8
There is not much that outranks wisdom. Let’s make a fresh commitment to walk in wisdom and express it in our personal life situations. We can be encouraged by the promise in James; the book of applied wisdom in the New Testament.
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all, without finding fault, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5.
PRAYER: Lord we acknowledge before you the challenges we face this week. At the same time, we praise you that you have given your wisdom to us to meet those challenges. Thank you for your generous gift of wisdom. Amen
