Today we look at another ‘prophetic proverb’ that tells us what will inevitably happen when we take particular actions.
My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight. They will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. – Proverbs 3:21,22
Sound judgment and discernment are two qualities that are prized so highly, they are like jewellery around one’s neck; gracing our appearance and making us look good. They are twin qualities, that when placed together give us life……and that’s a big statement. They must always be preserved and protected.
Sound judgment and discernment. What do these two words mean? I enjoy searching out the meaning of Biblical words. What did they mean to the original writer in the language in which they were originally written?
‘Sound judgment’ means finding out the essence or substance of something, or some situation. What’s behind it and what’s it’s root cause?
‘Discernment’ is the insight we have into a situation or issue from which we form a resolution or purpose.
Sound judgment and discernment set us up for life and enable us to receive the blessings that flow from their application.
This proverb is expanded out to list four bonuses that we gain when we preserve sound judgment and discernment. These are revealed in the next 2 verses of Proverbs 3.
- Then you will go on your way in safety – v23
We can confidently walk along our life path knowing security.
- your feet will not stumble – v23
The path is cleared so we don’t trip up.
- When you lie down you will not be afraid, – v24
A big test of our sound judgment and discernment is what happens when we go to bed at night. A major thief of sleep is mental anxiety and fears about what might happen when we wake up. We can go to bed at night free from anxiety and fear.
- when you lie down your sleep will be sweet. – v24
Good sleep may evade some of us simply because of our age, medication, or lack of adequate physical activity. But, good judgment and discernment in life will make the sleep we do have ‘sweet’.
Apply sound judgment and discernment and God’s blessing is promised. SWEET DREAMS!!
PRAYER: Lord, in the life issues that I face this week, please give me the insight to exercise sound judgment and discernment. Thank you for the blessing I will experience as a consequence.
I praise you for your word is inspired truth.
Thank you for the promise of Jesus to us ‘Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you’. Amen
