I have received a request to write one of my Proverbs devotions on integrity. My dictionary defines integrity in four words.
‘Wholeness, soundness, uprightness, and honesty’.
Integrity is a quality we expect from others in our dealings with them, and it is a quality that others should be able to expect from us. Proverbs are full of life situations requiring integrity. Let’s look at a few insights from Chapter 11.
- Integrity commences with what is within our heart.
The Lord detests men of perverse heart, but He delights in those whose ways are blameless. (Proverbs 11:20)
Perversity is the opposite of integrity.
- Integrity in business dealings.
The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are His delight. (Proverbs 11:1)
Integrity is honestly giving what a customer asks for and pays for. Cheating in business is abhorrent to the Lord.
- Integrity in our conversations. Talking is something we do a lot of.
A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbour but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. (Proverbs 11: 12 & 13)
These proverbs challenge us to be people of integrity in our conversations. We express our integrity in what we say or don’t say in relation to others. Good judgment, understanding and trustworthiness are all facets of integrity.
- Integrity is a measure of godly character that determines what we do and how we do it.
The integrity of the upright guides them... (Proverbs 11:3).
NEXT WEEK: Integrity Part 2
Father, we accept your call to be holy as you are. Thank you for the forgiveness of our sins as we make fresh confession to you. Today may someone see Christ in me, and hear His voice in mine.
May we shine as a light in the darkness…
Where we work
In our business dealings
In our conversations
May we hear someone say of us, that we are a person of integrity.
