Proverbs for Wednesday: Revealing & Concealing

A philosopher and a theologian were discussing the subject of ‘God’ and how to find Him. The theologian said to the philosopher that he was like a blind man in a dark room, looking for a black cat. The philosopher retorted that the theologian was like a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat— but a cat wasn’t there!

We know that God is there because He has revealed Himself to us. The light has been turned on, and the scales removed from our eyes. We have the capacity to see God’s revelation. We are given truth and insight to see what we need to see. Practical insight into how to think, perceive and live. To know what the bounds and limits are. To simply know all that our Father has for us.

Revelation is so necessary – Proverbs 29:18 says: Where there is no revelation the people  cast off restraint…………..or the older version, Where there is no revelation, the people perish

Revelation from God is absolutely essential for us, but it doesn’t just drop out of heaven.

Another Proverb says It is the glory of God to conceal a matter. To search out a matter is the glory of kings (25:2).

God concealing a matter seems contradictory to God revealing a matter. Revelation and concealing, however, are not contradictory but complementary. This proverb highlights our responsibility to search out the revelation needed. Revelation occurs when we take the time to search the scriptures taking the effort to delve in. Hungry to discover what God wants to say

To ask the personal questions:

What is the meaning of this?
What should I do in this situation?
What guidance can I find?
What insights will help me understand what is really going on here?

Remember Jesus said, seek and you will find. (Matthew 7:7)

PRAYER: Father we praise you that we no longer live in the darkness, but in your light, and can see and know you. We pray that you will reveal your wisdom to us

To our church leadership to ‘discern the times’.
To our children to grow in wisdom and to know your love.
To husbands and wives to be freshly blessed to live in partnership together.
To single parents to know they are not alone.
To our families to know how to model family life in our fractured society.

For all of us to grow in grace and the knowledge of Christ and to continue to search the scriptures for your insight and guidance. In Jesus Name, AMEN

HYMN: Break Thou the Bread of Life

O send your Spirit Lord, now unto me,
That He may touch my eyes and make me see.
Show me the truth concealed within your Word,
And in your book revealed I see thee Lord
