Blessed are the pure in heart

Written by Kevin Carlson

Please excuse my indulgence as we take another week to explore this sixth Beatitude-

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

The pure in heart; this is God’s working with our cooperation.

This is God’s plan his value and his call unto us to follow and to trust. As we ‘Hunger and thirst’ after God’s right ways (fourth Beatitude) the Bible comes alive and God’s Spirit burns within the earnest seeker to understand how to overcome and to become the person, and the people, proclaimed as, Blessed.

The Apostle Paul shows us ways towards purity of heart, that is, an undivided heart, in his letter to the Philippians. Just three to highlight for today’s reflection.

First: “….whatever is true…noble…right…pure…lovely…admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.” (chapt 48)

Put simply, what we watch, read, listen, participate in, approve of…works towards or proves to be hindrance or obstacle in God purifying our heart.

Secondly: Paul has this confidence and takes the mantel of his Apostleship to say-

“Whatever you have learned or received from me, or seen in me- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (chapt 49) “Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” (chapt 317)

Purity of heart is both modelled and learned from each other.

Thirdly: Paul says, “I want to know Christ…..not that I have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me… thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (chapt 310-14)

In the Kingdom of God we are on a journey- day by day, month by month and the years roll on. In and out of good times and not so good times yet one thing remains the same: that wonderful and most blessed place to be when we can say, ‘I want to know Christ….I press on towards the goal…..’ The blessedness of the pure in heart, for they indeed, shall see God.

Prayer: Gracious Father, my maker and redeemer, I rise to give thanks for this new day and all your provision bestowed. I thank you for Christ my Saviour; for Jesus who died for me. Now O Lord, as I venture into this day, show me good things to fill my mind, wholesome things; and wisdom from above to make choices and strength and courage to say ‘yes and no’ and to decide and follow through. In Christ my Lord……

“Face to face with Christ my Saviour, face to face what will it be;

When with rapture I behold him, Jesus Christ who died for me.

Only faintly now I see him, with the darkly veil between.

But a blessed day is coming when his glory shall be seen.”
