Proverbs for Wednesdays – The Road out…

(Written by Ray Smith)

Believe it or not, we’re on the road out. The road out of lockdown and isolation. We pray that as a nation we can keep moving down that road. Lots of Proverbs talk about the roads and pathways we take through life – and how right pathways lead us to our destination and destiny.

The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.- Proverbs 4:18

Paths that are right for us become clearer and clearer as we purposefully walk along them.

Proverbs 4:25-27 says:

Let your eyes look straight ahead
Fix your gaze directly before you,
Make level paths for your feet,
and take only ways that are firm
Do not swerve to the right or the left.

When we know our path will take us where we are meant to go, we have a responsibility to stay on it. We check that it is level and firm.

One of my favourite poems is titled The Road Not Taken, by American poet Robert Frost. I first read and studied it at high school as a 17 year old. It’s a poem I memorised and have been quoting it ever since. Here’s just a few lines from the poem.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both and be one traveller,
Long I stood, and looked down one as far as I could,
to where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other…………………………….

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

That poem was significant for me at that time in my life as I made choices to walk along the road to follow Christ and serve Him.

Which roads are yours to take at this pivotal time?
Which road will make a difference?
Which road will take you away from a place you’re not meant to stay in, and take you to a new place?

Which roads are God’s destined roads for you?

  • Father, we pray for the protection of our nation at this time, so we can fulfil the destiny you have for us.
  • We pray for those who are walking with us… Our family / our friends / the people we work with / fellow members of our church community.
  • We praise you that you have already mapped out the paths we are meant to walk along.
  • Lead us into new and fresh places where we can experience you afresh.
  • Lord bring us into places where we will see fresh opportunities to serve you and be your witnesses.
